Remake of Famous Pakistani Urdu Film Anjuman

The film is a tragedy based on a tawaif “Anjuman’ played by Rani, who is a “tawaiif” who flirts with the emotions of a wealthy Santosh and later falls in love with his younger brother played by Waheed. In order to save his older brother’s marriage Waheed’s character decides to frequent Anjuman’s “kotha” in an “exchange” demanded by Anjuman, although being in love with another girl (played by Deeba). Sabiha plays the role of wife of the older brother’s character in the film, and eventually implores Anjuman to forsake her own love so that Waheed’s Character can live happily. At the end, Anjuman (Rani) has to face a fate worse than death, where she is invited to sing at the wedding of her Love. Lovelorn and disappointed Anjuman offers a woeful song, as she has swallowed poison, and dies at the feet of her love.
Anjum Hayat Khan is a young and innocent girl, studying in university. Some notorious students therein use to tease her but she reacts nowhere and avoids facing them instead. Asif tries to stop those guys and this leads to a fight in the university. Later, the same group of students visits a “kotha” where they are stunned to see anjum, the same innocent girl, dancing before them. The very next day, same news is spread everywhere in the university and asif is also surprised to know it. However, Anjum (Anjuman as dancer) leaves the university with the question in asif’s mind as to how and why did she appear to.
Later, Asif’s brother “Wajaht” is found involved with a known prostitute and the rumour reaches the home soon where asif decides to go and meet with the prostitute. Doing so, asif is once again shocked to see that the prostitute is none other than Anjum herself, who is famous as Anjuman. Here she reveals that Wajahat has puchased her on the ceremony of “nat utarwai” and she is now property of Wajaht. Now, asif replaces himself with his brother and stays with Anjuman. There are so many twists waiting to take turn and there are so many questions in Asif’s mind need to be answered as to how and why does she became prostitute.

A serial which is all about the sacred institution of marriage, and how it is vital to a prosperous and thriving society. To the average outsider, Rania and Sheeraz look like the perfect couple; they are well to do, have two beautiful children and seem to be perfect for each other. However, as we later learn, things aren’t always as they seem on the outside. Rania is shocked when she finds out about Sheeraz’ extra marital affair with a woman called Mehreen. She decides to leave him and from hereon begins a journey that is destined to change the whole family’s lives forever. Sheeraz eventually marries Mehreen and takes son Arsal with him. The couple start living a lavish life, the money for which comes from Sheeraz’ under-the -table dealings as a corrupt bureaucrat. Rania meanwhile marries the good-hearted Jasim and takes daughter Maham with her. While both Sheeraz and Rania seem happy in their new lives, it is in the tragic fate of their children Maham and Arsal that a vital lesson can be learnt on the sanctity of marriage. Separated by their parents, Maham and Arsal grow up amidst a host of insecurities and develop a variety of problems. For Arsal, living with his step mother almost ends up costing him his life. While For Maham, it is the feeling of not being part of her mother’s new family, which haunts her.
However fate soon catches up with Sheeraz and he is arrested on corruption charges. After returning from jail, Sheeraz is shocked to find his home, property and wealth are all now owned by Maheen, who is now living there with her beau Raheel. Maheen explains to Sheeraz that his money was all she ever wanted, and that she had actually always been in love with Raheel. And if this wasn’t devastating enough, Sheeraz is also shocked to find Arsal critically ill after suffering years of mental abuse at the hands of his stepmother. So for Sheeraz, life eventually comes full circle when he is left penniless and has to beg Rania for money to save their dying son.
Believable characters and relationships make this a serial which isn’t just emotional and moving, but also comments on the universal need to ‘belong’ and be loved by your family.

Based on a series of true incidents, this serial is a love story set against the backdrop of Pakistan’s prevailing feudal system. The serial also lays bare the country’s volatile political scenario and questions the many human rights movements that are running within it.
The story revolves around Shumaila and Bilal, two star-crossed lovers whose eventual love marriage sets of a chain of high-profile and politically motivated events. Angry at their marrying of their own accord, certain elements from both the couple’s families try to twist things around so that Bilal is eventually accused of kidnapping Shumaila and committing Zina. From here on starts the couple’s suffering, as they become victims of a viscous cycle of political conspiracy and family politics. Shumaila and Bilal are forced to part, as she is taken captive in an isolated part of the country and his life is in danger because certain ‘elements’ want to kill him for the ‘sin’ he has supposedly committed. While the country’s media and human rights movements do hype up the case, they of course only do so as a way of achieving high ratings and extra funding, leaving the couple as alone and helpless as ever. In a gripping climax, Shumaila is almost made to bow to pressure from her captives to go against Bilal in court. She resists, only to find Bilal himself bowing down to pressure by claiming that he never married Shumaila after all. The question is, that has Bilal really bowed down to pressure, or is his statement just part of the plan to get himself and his wife out of this grueling situation.
A serial that is based for the most part on true stories and has been filmed in real locations including Sukkur, Karachi, Jamshoro, Rahim Yar Khan and Pir Jo Goth. Almost all judicial proceedings and judges remarks have been taken from real life cases, and just serve to highlight how common the story is for couples who marry of their own free will.
This is one serial, which is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s current socio-cultural context and comments on the many drawbacks and flaws that stem from the country’s feudal culture.
