He may have made his debut as Pakistan’s answer to Dilip Kumar but Mirza Nazeer Baig Mughal has evolved from a super-hit actor into a superstar during his 43-year career. The journey that began with Chakori in 1967 is still going strong. Not only has Nadeem outlived his contemporaries but also inspired generations with his charismatic personality and professional ethics.
Born on 19th July, 1941, in Madras (now Chennai), India, to a family with no links to showbiz, he made his debut in Chakori when the intended hero of the film, Azeem, quit days before shooting was to commence. He not only impressed the audience with his acting skills and dashing looks but also belied critics who didn’t consider him a threat in the beginning.
With countless hits to back him, Nadeem achieved iconic status in the ’70s and gave a hard time to Waheed Murad, Mohammad Ali and Shahid during the decade that saw him churn out hits with directors Pervez Malik, Nazrul Islam, S. Suleman and many others.
He has so far worked in 200-plus films since Chakori. Although he hasn’t tried his hand at direction but has been active on the scene for the past 43 years, winning fans all over the world and all awards imaginable. And if you think you know it all about this great actor, go through the trivia below and know more about Nadeem the actor, singer, producer and the man behind the numerous cinematic hits.
1. We all know Nadeem sang the duet Kahan ho tumko dhoondh rahi hain… with Firdousi Begum besides many other hits during his film career. But do you know he sang one song on an actor other than himself? Who and what was it?
2. In how many films did superstars Waheed Murad, Mohammad Ali and Nadeem act together?
3. Has he worked in an Indian film?
4. Has Nadeem ever played a negative role in his illustrious career?
5. Not many actors have played triple roles in a film during their careers. Is Nadeem one of the actors who have done so?
6. What was the ‘odd thing’ about the leading ladies in Nadeem’s debut TV serial Bisaat, directed by Ghazanfar Ali in 2000?
7. Playboy, Ishq Ishq, Inteha and Koi Tujh Sa Kahan. What do these films have in common?
8. Nadeem has never directed a film, but has he produced any?
9. There was a vast difference in Nadeem’s hairstyles during the ’70s and then again in the ’80s. Which was the first film in which he attempted his post-80s hairstyle?
10. What is the significance of films such as Sangdil, Anari and Talaash in Nadeem’s career?
Answers:
1. The actor was Mohammad Qavi Khan and the film was Mr Buddho (1973), in which Nadeem sang the song, Kitne Ashq Piye Hain Phir Bhi Zinda Hoon, with the late playback singers Mala and Ahmed Rushdi lending their vocals for Deeba and Rangeela, respectively;
2. Three. Their first film together was Phool Mere Gulshan Ka (1974) followed by Shama (1974) and Jab Jab Phool Khile (1975). Nadeem also has the distinction of working with great artistes including Santosh Kumar, Darpan, Alauddin, Kamal, Shahid, David, Shashi Kapoor and Raj Babbar during his career;
3. Nadeem played the angry young man Tony in Bollywood’s Doordesh in 1983, where he was pitted against Bangladeshi actress Babita and Indian actors Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Parveen Babi, Raj Babbar and David. The film was directed by Ambrish Sangal and was by the Canadian Production house Friends Film International;
4. His role in the multi-starrer Shama (1974) had shades of grey, but in Samaj and Suhaag he played a full-throttle villain. Mohammad Ali was the good guy in Samaj whereas Zia Mohyuddin played the bespectacled hero in Suhaag;
5. Yes, he has. In fact he was the first actor in Pakistan to do so. He played three roles simultaneously in Jaltay Sooraj Kay Neechay which was released in 1971, and was produced by Afzaal Chaudhry in the then East Pakistan;
6. Both the leading ladies — Aaminah Haq and Nosheen Tariq — were born after Nadeem made his big screen debut in Chakori (1967). Yet he seemed at ease against the youngsters, fitting in as the leading man;
7. Nadeem is the only actor in Pakistan to work with four female directors who have also been his co-stars. The directors of the first three films — Shamim Ara, Sangeeta and Samina Peerzada — on numerous occasions played Nadeem’s leading ladies during his career. Shamim Ara in Parai Aag and Suhaag, Sangeeta in countless flicks including Anari and Mutthi Bhar Chawal and Samina Peerzada in Bazaar-i-Husn and Bulandi. The director of the last flick in the list — Reema Khan — has worked with Nadeem in over a dozen films mostly as his daughter or the son’s love interest;
8. Not one but two. Mitti Kay Putlay (1974) was his first movie as a producer whereas the Punjabi film Mukhra (1988) once again saw him in the role of the producer;
9. Many believe that Nazrul Islam’s Bandish was the first film in which Nadeem changed his hairstyle, which is incorrect. Pervez Malik’s Pakeeza (1979) was the first flick in which he experimented with his hair. When his character loses his memory, his hairstyle changes… and when he regains his memory it’s back to the ’70s hairdo;
10. Nadeem has worked in not one but three films with the same name. While the first Anari and Sangdil were black and white flicks, and the others were in colour, the first Talash was released in 1976 and the other one a decade later. Not only were the stories of all these flicks different but also the directors.

It’s a testimony to the fact that current affairs have eclipsed the entertainment industry in Pakistan. Otherwise why would actors of decent repute turn to talk show hosting? Nadia Khan started her showbiz career as an actress; she’s a morning show anchor now. Bushra Ansari is a performer with solid credentials; she’s become a chat show host. Maya Khan’s claim to fame was her decent acting in a play called Laila Majnoon; she’s interviewing people these days. And add to this ongoing list superstar and film actor Nadeem. And herein lies the difference between a great artiste and the secondary lot.
Watching Nadeem indulging in a tête-à -tête with celebrities is a delight. The actor, who is head and shoulders above in terms of his art and stature than most of the people that appear on his programme, speaks to the guests in such a gentlemanly manner and without a modicum of rancor that you start thinking: why can’t others be like him? But then, he belongs to the breed for whom diction, decorum and dedication matter more than self-aggrandisement.
Oh yes, before I forget. If only his show’s end credits could qualify Nadeem sahib as a compere and not ‘compare’. Or is it my eyes?

There was a time when Pakistan film industry was flourishing and there used to be a huge rush at the cinema halls. Artists like Nadeem, Waheed Murad, Mohammed Ali, Zeba Ali, Shabnam, Babra Sharif, Syed Kamal etc ruled the hearts of people. There were great singers, musicians and composers who composed many ever green songs which people still enjoy.
Our industry is credited with having produced some very good films in the past. Armaan, Aina, Tehzeeb, Ashi, Heer Ranjha, Do Ansoo were big hits.
But now, the scenario has changed. The film industry that once was the identity of Pakistan, is in a bad shape. And the misery is that nobody wants to take the responsibility of rebuilding it. Everyone associated with the industry and cinema business is playing the blame game. Cinema owners are of the view that Lollywood directors and producers are not making good films and they are the ones who must suffer the damage. On the other hand, directors and producers have other concerns. They blame cinema owners and film distributors for bringing Indian films in Pakistan and screening them at local cinema houses.
It is true that there have been various factors that contributed to the collapse of local film industry, but the screening of Indian films at the local cinemas has a large part to play in speeding the downfall.
The big names of our industry have been making hue and cry over the issue since the first Indian film was screened here, but to no avail.
Syed Noor, leading Lollywood director, while talking to MAG said, “It is a bitter fact that we are a weak industry but the situation is not that bad. Pakistan film industry is producing some very good films. But unfortunately our people compare our films with the Indian movies which are being screened at local cinema houses.â€
“We can’t blame the masses. They are being provided with the choice of whether to watch an Indian film or a Pakistani movie at the same venue. And the cinema owners and distributors who are bringing Indian movies here, should be blamed for making the condition worse for Pakistani directors and producers,†he said.
“Pakistan is an Islamic country. It has its own values, culture and traditions. The Indian films are doing harm to our society. I don’t understand why the government has allowed the screening of Indian movies here,†he added.
He further said that nobody could blame Pakistani directors and producers for the downfall of Lollywood. “At least they are sincere in their efforts. They are making movies for the local audience. They are trying to survive depite diffculties. But the distributors who are buying Indian movies should be blamed for the further collapse. It is a fact that educated people prefer to see Indian films because of their production values and bold scenes. They have a choice now. Let me say that high budget Indian movies have a lead role in the downfall of Pakistan film industry,†Syed Noor declared.
“The only reason that good films are not being made here is lack of financers. Why don’t the distributors, who buy expensive Indian films, invest their money in Lollywood?
“Let me tell you that there are still many people who want to see our films. And the example is my film ‘Main Nach Ke Yaar Manana’ which has done more business than Wanted in Punjab,†Noor said.
He was of the view that Pakistan’s film industry direly needs media support. “A very strong reason behind the popularity of Bollywood stars is strong media. And Pakistani media is doing the same. Instead of promoting their own actors, they are highlighting the Indian stars which is highly regrettable,†he said.
To take the other side of the picture, MAG contacted Nawab Huzoorul Hassan, a prominent name in local cinema industry. He said, “If Lollywood has failed to produce good films, then why should we suffer. At least, screening of Indian movies can attract big crowd to theatres.â€
“The people who are criticising screening of Bollywood movies, don’t want a flourishing cinema industry. There were 63 cinemas in Lahore, 18 in Rawalpindi, 19 in Multan, 19 in Faisalabad, 11 in Gujranwala, 12 in Sialkot, 12 in Peshawar, 86 in Karachi, 22 in Hyderabad, 12 in Sukkur, 2 in Larkana, and 8 in Quetta.â€
“Now, the number has reduced to 23 in Lahore, 12 in Rawalpindi, 14 in Multan, 13 in Faisalabad, 10 in Gujranwala, 8 in Sialkot, 36 in Karachi, 3 in Hyderabad, and none at all in Sukkur and Larkana,†he added.
He said that it was untrue that cinema owners want to destroy the film industry. We waited for 38 long years, faced the worst economic crisis but stood against all odds because we wanted to see a strong Pakistani film industry. But the situation has become worse now.â€
The number of cinema houses will be reduced from 36 to 10 if the screening of Bollywood films is stopped, he said expressing his concern.
“I don’t understand why people are making such a hue and cry over this issue? Whatever the differences between the Pakistani and Indian governments, entertainment has nothing to do with them. Bollywood is a big industry and people want to see their movies and that’s it,†he said.
“Khuda Ke Liye was screened in 10 cities of India and it was a huge success there. It was welcomed by the Indian press and Bollywood. It’s a two way process and we should also accept it wholeheartedly,†he said.
“I ask the film directors and producers why they don’t make Urdu films. There are more people who understand Urdu than Punjabi. Then why are they making movies for a certain segment. Syed Noor is a very good director and writer. He should make some efforts to produce a good Urdu movie with fresh faces,†he said.
MAG then talked to Nadeem Mandviwalla, Chairman of the Pakistan Film Exhibitors Association (Southern Zone). According to him Pakistani public at large watches only two kinds of films – Bollywood and Hollywood. The spoken language in the country remains Urdu and as such; the majority of public is only interested in Indian films.
“While we can give some fillip to cinema industry by importing American films, however it will remain very limited to the areas where English is spoken frequently and can contribute to the extent of only five per cent to the cinema industry. So if any development in the rebuilding of the cinemas in Pakistan is to be done, then we can only achieve that with the import of more and mre Indian films on larger,†he said.
He was of the view that in the absence of the production of indigenous films for the next five to 10 years the entire rebuilding process of cinemas totally depends on the import of Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
“The fact remains that since the government has allowed screening of Indian films, the process of closure of cinema houses has stopped, new cinemas are being built and the refurbishment of old cinemas has started which had not happened since 1975,†he concluded.

Raheel has been living in America for the last 4 years. He visits Pakistan once a year and every time he has an excuse to go hack although he had initially gone for only one year. His parents, Mian Safeer and his wife, Farida had really no interest in his studies abroad but somehow they got convinced to send him to the states. Although Mian Safeer had fairly large business which needed Raheel,s presence in Pakistan. Raheel,s younger sister, Rashna misses him a lot and she prepares a plan in which she tries to get Raheel involved with his father’s business partner, Sohail’s sister, Dua and without even consulting Raheel she starts preparing for his wedding with Dua. During this maneuvering she herself gets involved with Kamran who is Dua’s younger brother. Kamran is a quiet type of a person and is always busy in his books and computers and is not at all receptive to Rashna’s approach. But somehow Rashan’s interest in Kamran grows gradually with time. During this period the arrangements of Raheel’s wedding are almost complete and he’s called back from the states of his life when he reaches home and sees that his wedding is almost a few days away.
For some reason or the other he does not protest and gets married to Dua. During his marriage he receives constant calls from his girlfriend Romana from the states requesting him to return to the states as soon as possible. Raheel is constantly hiding his marriage from and giving her various excuses. While all this is happening, Rashna tells Kamran very openly about her love for Kamran. But Kamran blatantly disappoints her. But Rashna however goes through Raheel’s wedding with a broken heart. Soon after the wedding Raheel convinces Dua that he has to return to the states, although both the families are against Raheel’s return to the state at this stage. While he is preparing to leave, Romana lands in Pakistan and announces to Raheel’s family that she is his first wife whom he married 2 years ago. This announces shocks the entire family and Romana makes a huge hue and cry about Raheel’s faithlessness. Raheel is now in a state of shock. However Romana manages to take Raheel back with her to the states and leaves Dua behind with her parents. Dua’s brothers, Sohail takes serious note of the situation and the partnership of Sohail and Mian Safeer gets tense. At this stage, Sohail’s wife, Rabia convinces him to avoid any confrontation or any breakup of partnership with Mian Safeer. Sohail takes the advice of his wife. During these circumstances Kamran starts showing his interest towards Rashna. Rashna is overjoyed and this results in the announcement of their marriage which surprises everybody, but they all begin to prepare for the wedding. Raheel also comes back to attend his sister’s wedding along with Romana. Dua goes through this wedding with a heavy heart. From a dark corner Dua watches Kamran leave Rashna on their wedding night and goes to meet Raheel. He confronts him with threat that if he does not take Dua back in his life, Kamran would leave Rashna also to suffer the same fate as Dua.
